A Day at the Zoo in the middle of Winter!

February 27th is International Polar Bear Day I recently learned so we decided to go to the zoo and give Ella her first chance to see a live one.  Along with her cousins, we bundled up and made a day of it.  It’s often hard to find additional activities during the winter to do with Ella so this was a nice option.  Plus she just completed a unit at school about polar bears so the timing was perfect. 5 Countries in two weeks for $300 each! A family trip of a lifetime.

Last fall I received an e-mail from a friend about a one way flight from JFK to Europe and then to Tokyo for $150.  It was hard to believe so I thought I’d check it out to see what the “catch” was as it seemed too good to be true!  Turns out these flight glitches happen from time to time due to keying errors.   You have to book quickly before the prices go back to full fare.  I was of course wary that they would not honour the ticket but for that price, I thought I’d take my chances!  We had to wait until the next morning before my husband could confirm dates that didn’t conflict with work obligations, so we ended up paying just over $300 including taxes and fees per ticket – still an amazing deal!

Cinderella cropped without wordsGoing to Disney World for the first time, I wanted to try to fit in as much as we could in three days.  Given that Ella is 4yrs and obsessed with princesses, the overwhelming consensus was that we needed to spend the majority of our time at Magic Kingdom.  In addition to Magic Kingdom, we also visited Animal Kingdom and Epcot which were all so different but such an amazing experience.  Where else can you have a meal with princesses, see a gorilla and giraffe, then try food from several different countries made and served by those who were flown over from that country all in one day!

Here are the top 10 tips: (more…)

After Ella turned two, going on trips got more expensive now that we had to purchase a seat on the plane for her.  My obsession with collecting points kicked into high gear.  I wanted to be able to travel without incurring this additional cost or have to wait longer than usual to earn enough points for the tickets.  Over the last four years the three of us have flow all on points to Athens Greece, London England, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco and back from Japan.  All we had to pay for were the taxes required when using points. Europe with a one year old! Family Travel Tips

We had always wanted to go to Greece (one of our must see bucket list destinations) so we decided it would be a great experience to enjoy with the newest member of our family.  When I searched for flights, there was a flight on points that had us flying into Athens Greece and out of London England so we figured why not experience another destination for the same number of points!  Of course we wanted to be safe and ensure she had all of her necessary shots so we booked the flight for the day after her 1yr old shots.  I guess you have to actually turn 1 to get the shots, not a day earlier.

At Ella’s 1yr old check-up to get the needed shots, our doctor heard a slight heart murmur.  We couldn’t believe it as we were set to fly out the very next day!   (more…)
