Summer Camp Round-up. It was worth it!

Summer seemed to fly by this year and we’re sad to see the nice weather starting to turn.  Looking back at Ella’s summer camps this year I’m happy to report it wasn’t babysitting at all – it was definitely worth it!  The cost for the camps was quite reasonable and about the same as I would have paid for a week’s worth of babysitting.  I feel she got so much more from having tried them.

Highlights of what she took away from each of the camps:

  • Cheer Camp – she learned how to do a cartwheel and the splits!  Putting on a show after a one week camp was pretty impressive as well (video below).  She looked up to the older kids and learned how to work and coordinate an end result within a team.  Being an only child, I always worry about her need to be the only focus and she seemed to do just fine sharing the spotlight and working cooperatively without conflict.  It’s funny how something so simple can help build this skill set.  She’s not into sports so I will have to find more ways for her to participate in team activities for sure.

First Year of Piano – A great start at 4yrs old!

It’s been a ride this past year with starting piano lessons.  Looking back, there were struggles and breakthroughs.  I often go back to whether starting her in piano at 4yrs old was the right decision.  Reflecting back despite the challenges I still feel it was a good choice.  She’s learned to focus a little more (a huge hurdle at 4yrs as I’m sure you know) and that with some hard work and perseverance, the end result and recognition (remember she’s a Leo!) was all worth it. Ready for Back to School? Don’t lose another item!

Everyone who has sent a child to daycare, school and/or camps knows that regardless of how distinctive the hat or other clothing item is, the teacher or camp counsellor will not remember who it belongs to if it gets separated from your child.  Inevitably something gets lost or you have to search through the pile of items in the lost and found to retrieve the item.  That’s why I went label happy!

A few months ago, I was contacted by Sticker Kid and was given samples of labels to try.  So that’s exactly what I did.  It’s taken me a few months to write this post as I truly wanted to put them to the test.  So I am happy to report that Ella and I have put them to the test for the last four months (at school and many camps).

Tennis – it’s all about the outfit!

So in our attempt to give Ella a well rounded summer camp experience, I enrolled her for tennis camp.  Luckily there is one close to my work so I could easily drop off and pick up.  Ella never took a real interest in sports so I figured she took after me in this area and never really thought much of it.  Then my husband suggested after I signed her up for cheer camp, that we at least expose her to another activity that she could have a chance to make a career out of if she was good.  He was skeptical with the whole cheer thing so I figure we’d give it a shot and have her try “a real sport”.  Maybe she had outgrown her past history of running and tripping over her own feet and had some hidden athletic talent we hadn’t allowed her to develop yet!

5 Countries in two weeks for $300 each! A family trip of a lifetime.

Last fall I received an e-mail from a friend about a one way flight from JFK to Europe and then to Tokyo for $150.  It was hard to believe so I thought I’d check it out to see what the “catch” was as it seemed too good to be true!  Turns out these flight glitches happen from time to time due to keying errors.   You have to book quickly before the prices go back to full fare.  I was of course wary that they would not honour the ticket but for that price, I thought I’d take my chances!  We had to wait until the next morning before my husband could confirm dates that didn’t conflict with work obligations, so we ended up paying just over $300 including taxes and fees per ticket – still an amazing deal!
